Emily Dickinson Owner

I've been a programmer for 15 years. Before starting ClearCart, I worked on a variety of projects--from complexity studies at the Santa Fe Institute, to gene analysis at the National Center for Genome Resources.

When working at these esteemed institutions, one thing always hit home: being smart doesn't necessarily mean getting things done. I worked beside brilliant minds, and they depended on me to implement their ideas. With everything I learned there, it's this practical lesson that has stuck with me--that no matter how brilliant the theory, it's the application that matters. ClearCart is not just theory. ClearCart works.

My love of business stems from this intersection of theory and practicality. Business is where ideas hit the road and get tested. You have to produce practical results - your business depends on it. This immediacy is exciting and motivating.

I love running this business. I get up every morning excited to meet the challenges of the day. As a smaller provider, I have the luxury of really getting to know my customers. I am fascinated to learn about how other people run their businesses, what motivates them, how they have overcome obstacles. On a daily basis, I make some connection with a customer which enhances one or both of our lives. I never have a sense that we built ClearCart from scratch; we built it with our customers, and they continue to inform and guide us at every step along the way.

I started building websites almost as soon as I found out what the Internet was. To me, web design means having the ability to create useful things that are also beautiful. I've come to conclude that great websites are half about design, half about engineering, and 100% about usability.

When I met Emily, I was running a small company focused on helping small business customers with e-commerce design. Emily was working at a corporate job, and was drawn to the idea of starting her own business. Our skills naturally dovetail and we worked on a few client projects together.

As Emily and I discussed the industry, I lamented that every cart took a great deal of customization before it looked good. Over many animated discussions about business, design, programming, Joel Spolsky, and usability, a plan emerged to address the woes of every web designer and store owner who had searched in vain for a cart that was robust, well-crafted, and looked great without a lot of expensive and non-upgradable customization work.

It would be beautiful. It would be functional. It would combine the three principles of software that we both hold dear: simplicity, usability, and elegant design. Most of all, it would make people happier by making their lives easier and their businesses run more smoothly. ClearCart was born.

In helping shape and develop ClearCart, I feel honored to be working on vision-inspired software. There is something special about a business or project that is inspired, not just by necessity or by the desire to make a living, but by the desire to change the world for the better. It's not just about getting things done, but also about taking a stand about what kind of world you want to create.

After a good deal of research, we chose to work with LiquidWeb, because we believe they're simply the best in the industry.

LiquidWeb owns and operates its entire infrastructure, and all of their datacenters are staffed 24/7 by knowledgeable, competent engineers. With features like 24-hour pro-active server monitoring, extensive backups, a 100% network uptime guarantee, and pro-active service restoration, we feel that the security and reliability of LiquidWeb is simply unmatched.

When we realized we wanted to do e-commerce right, we also decided it wasn't necessary to re-invent the wheel. We needed a cart that was solid, that we could expand upon, was programmed to Emily's standards of scalability, and had the flexibility to let Emma design to her exacting tastes. And above all it had to be well supported and backed by an excellent team of programmers. Many checklists and phone calls later, we selected PinnacleCart to be the engine that powers ClearCart.

What is the difference between PinnacleCart and ClearCart?
We have added and expanded features, refined the user interface and flow, given the cart an extreme visual makeover, and we are always designing new ClearCart plug-ins to enhance the user and administrator experience.
